SYMPATHISERS were moved to tears, weekend as they watched the lifeless body of a 38-year old man, Amidu Olajire, a hunter who reportedly killed himself after his wife abandoned him and their six children.
The corpse of the hunter, who was said to have committed suicide by shooting himself with a locally-made gun was discovered around 6.40am on Saturday after unsuccessful attempt by his mother to pacify him over the issue of his runaway wife.
The incident happened at Bakatari area of Ibadan, in Ido Local Government Area of Oyo State. Some moments after the deceased reportedly left his mother in annoyance, he went straight to his uncompleted building and pulled the trigger of the Dane-gun.
It was the sound of the gun that reportedly attracted neighbours but before they could get to him, he was dead, lying in his pool of blood.
Speaking on the sad incident, the Chairman, Landlords’ Association of the area, Mr. Mathew Bolaji, who described the incident as “shocking” wondered why the hunter who was popular in the area could commit suicide.
According to one of the community leaders in the area, Chief Mukaila Adebayo, he was in his house some minutes before 7am when he heard a booming sound of a gun followed by wailing of people who later told him the hunter had shot himself dead.
Vanguard gathered that a long local gun, a bottle of gunpowder and his mobile phone were found at the scene of the incident.
Already, policemen from Apata Police Station have taken the remains of the hunter to Adeoyo Hospital and said preliminary investigation conducted revealed that the man killed himself out of frustration.
The grandmother of the deceased was quoted as saying that hunter left her around 6.30am after telling her how his wife deserted him with six children.
She said: “After expressing his displeasure at the attitude of his wife, I tried to pacify him, not to take laws into his hand. He asked me to take him to a doctor for treatment but I told him that we cannot get any treatment from the doctor because we were still indebted to the hospital.
He then left in annoyance saying I would not like what he would do after now. All that I heard was that he had killed himself.”
