Falana condemns killing of protesters

Labour leaders and rights activists yesterday condemned the shooting of protesters by police in Lagos and Kano states over increase in fuel price.
Mr Femi Falana who reacted in a statement over the killings urged the Attorney-Generals of Lagos and Kano states to immediately commence criminal actions against the policemen involved in the shooting and killings of the protesters who he said were not armed.
According to him, the action of the policemen were criminal and unlawful, since according to him, “the Court of Appeal had as far back as December 2007, upheld the fundamental rights of Nigerian citizens including workers, to take part in peaceful rallies or protests against official policies.
“We call on the Inspector-General of Police to caution police personnel deployed to maintain law and order to desist from engaging in the callous shooting of innocent protesters.”
The lawyer also called on the Goodluck Jonathan Administration to respond urgently and positively to the legitimate demands of the Nigerian people by directing the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency to withdraw the illegal increase in the price of petrol and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to investigate the fuel importation scam.
