WAR SHIP ARRIVES LAGOS

Nigeria’s newly acquired warship, Nigerian Navy Ship THUNDER, arrived in the country on Thursday morning.
The ship, which was acquired in May, 2011, has a cruising range of 9,600 nautical miles at 20 knots and an 80-foot flight deck making it an ideal platform for extended patrol.
The ship was manned by 150 officers and ratings under the command of Captain Mohammed Nagenu.
The Minister of Defence, represented by the Minister of State for Defence, Mrs. Olusola Obada, at THUNDER’s reception, said with the acquisition of the warship, the Navy’s policing duties would be greatly enhanced.
She said, “Permit me to recall the promise of Mr. President (Goodluck Jonathan) in September 2010 to the effect that government will make sure that all requirements are met because we have no choice, and if we don’t protect our coastal waters then it will certainly affect the economy of this country.
“In effect, the acquisition of NNS THUNDER and indeed recent funding of new patrol vessels acquisition bear testimony to Mr. President’s commitment to revamping the operational readiness of the Nigerian Navy.”
The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice-Admiral Ola Ibrahim, said the acquisition of the warship resulted from the cordial relationship between the US and Nigeria.
He said, “NN has three major roles – military duties, policing duties and diplomatic role.
“Permit me to also express our appreciation to the US government and in particular, the United States Embassy, United States Navy, United States Coast Guard and the United States Africa Command for their tireless efforts toward making this occasion a reality.” (from the punch)
