PROTECT THE CITIZENS - REPS TELL SECURITY AGENTS

ABUJA — The House of Representatives, yesterday, directed all security agencies in the country to do everything possible to secure the lives of every Nigerian where ever they may be living within the territorial boundary of the country.

In a motion adopted on the spate of killings, especially targeting churches, mosques and other innocent Nigerians in different parts of the country, the House also called onNigerians wherever they may be living in the country to ignore the ultimatum given by the Boko Haram for southern Christians living in the North to leave the region.

Yesterday’s motion was sponsored by Hon. Samson Osagie and enjoyed bi-partisan and regional support from all members of the House of Representatives.

Entitled: “The unjustified killings in parts of the country,” Osagie noted that the killing of Nigerians was assuming a frightening ethnic and religious coloration reminiscent of the events leading to the Nigerian civil war of 1967, adding that “this killings and the general state of insecurity in the country call for urgent action on the part of government and the cooperation of the people.”

While contributing to the motion, Hon. Shehu Shagari noted that from what is happening in the country, it appears ‘somebody somewhere is trying to knock together the heads of Nigerians’ to achieve a pre-determined aim and called on Nigerians to resist this with all their might.

The House also called on elder statesmen to come out to condemn any act of terrorism in order to send a strong message that Nigerians are united in their stand against terrorism, while also directing its members to use their state caucuses to reach out to their constituents with a view to dissuading them from engaging in or protecting terrorism and terrorists in their midst.
