Strange Fire Hits Delta State Government House, Documents Destroyed

Property worth millions of Naira, including vital documents, cash and personal belongings were on Sunday night destroyed in a strange fire in the Press Centre building of Government House, Asaba.

The inferno, which was said to have started at about 10pm, was brought under control by the Delta State Fire Service who prevented it from razing the entire building. Investigations are understood to have commenced to ascertain the cause of the fire incident and the extent of the damage.  Government House sources believe the inferno may have been caused by electrical faults in the building.

The Chief Press Secretary to the state governor, Mr. Sunny Ogefere, whose office was damaged in the fire, released a statement, saying, “At about 10pm last night (Sunday March 25, 2012) there was a fire outbreak in the Press Centre building, Government House, Asaba. Security officials on duty promptly alerted other personnel who called the State Fire Service. The Fire Service came and brought the fire under control preventing it from razing the entire building.”

According to the statement, “The office of the Chief Press Secretary and the adjoining office occupied by the supporting staff were mainly affected by the fire. The deputy governor, Prof Amos Utuama SAN; the Chief of Staff, Dr Festus Okubor; the Permanent Secretary, Government House and Protocol, Mr. Tony Obuh; and the Commissioner of Police in charge of the State, Mr. Ikechukwu Aduba were on ground in the night to ensure that the fire was brought under control.”
