Jonathan cannot be my vice, I don't want to die yet, AU Chairman says

New African Union Chairman, Boni Yayi of Benin Republic who was elected on Sunday after Equatorial Guinea's President Teodoro Obiang Nguema passed on the baton of office has declared a ‘Thanks but no thanks’ to suggestions that Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan be made his Vice Chairman.

Although there is no statutory or positional seat for the Office of the Vice-Chairman in the African Union (AU), media reports were quick to jump at the hilarious nature surrounding the statement of the new AU Chairman and the circumstances preceding Goodluck Jonathan’s dramatic height to power.

Boni Yayi an economist was quoted as saying "I wish to express my gratitude with respect and appreciation to the heads of state we have here for the confidence they have in my regard," Yayi said after the vote.

Local media however reported a seemingly joking statement from an out of sight microphone quoting him as responding "No I don't want to die yet, I heard all his superiors end up diminishing or fading out, please this is not negotiable at all, let's discuss something else"

It would be recalled that Nigeria's President Goodluck Jonathan has a highly superstitious trail surrounding his ascent to power for which he's had several superiors unable to complete their terms of office for varying circumstances – a storyline that attracted so much charisma which undoubtedly helped him during the April 2011 Presidential votes in Nigeria. culled from Ascology
