Tough one for Nyako as embittered Speaker takes over in Adamawa

ADAMAWA State was calm for most of yesterday as residents awaited signals from key political actors on the course of action following the sacking of the former governor of the state, Alhaji Murtala Nyako.
At issue immediately the Supreme Court verdict was given was the puzzle over who between rival Speakers of the House of Assembly should be sworn in as the Acting Governor of the State. In the end, the newly elected Speaker, Alhaji Umar Finitri who was reportedly elected against the counsel of Nyako was sworn in yesterday evening.

Meanwhile, the current security challenges in the state following a series of attacks purportedly by the Boko Haram group might have prevented opposing political parties from trooping to the streets to celebrate the sacking of Governor Murtala Nyako who came to office on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. Nyako had last October won the PDP’s gubernatorial ticket for re-election in the contest that was originally scheduled to have taken place at the beginging of January but subsequently rescheduled because of insecurity.
Nyako is pitched in electoral battle with former governor of Lagos and Borno States, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa who is flying the flag of the Congress of Progressive Change, CPC.
Last December the State House of Assembly in a surprising move had sacked its Speaker, Ibrahim Sadiq and his Deputy, Wale Fwa in a move that suggested untoward consequences for the former governor.
The new speaker, Ahmed Umar Fintiri was regarded in some quarters to be hostile to the Nyako leadership and it was as such speculated that he could be used by opponents of Nyako to stifle Nyako in the case of an eventuality as was brought up by yesterday’s court judgment.

Sadiq had taken his case to court alleging that he was improperly removed though more than two thirds of the house members were in agreement on the issue of his removal. Following the removal of the former speaker the state government had authorized the closure of the legislative complex on the basis of what it alleged as security considerations.
Remarkably, the new speaker, Finitiri who was inaugurated yesterday as Acting Governor had since his election as Speaker  not been able to convene a meeting of the legislature even at the peak of the killings in the state.

How the Acting governor flaunts his instrument of office could be eventful given the desperate efforts of the opposition led by Marwa to woo as many stakeholders that are disillusioned with Nyako.
