Labour clashes with Police in Enugu
Members of the organised labour, who attempted to protest in Enugu on Wednesday, clashed with the police at the entrance of the state secretariat of the Nigeria Labour Congress.
The labour activists attempted to take off from the premises of the NLC state secretariat, Enugu but stern looking mobile police officers, numbering over 50, prevented them from going out.
The security operatives, since last Monday, cordoned off the NLC Secretariat, reportedly on the orders of Governor Sullivan Chime who had prohibited any assembly or protests from groups in the state.
It was however gathered that the workers and members of the Civil Society Organisations, afraid of losing their lives, retreated and regrouped at the NLC conference hall to re-strategise.
A source in the state police command, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the police stopped the workers from carrying out the protest “because hoodlums may hijack it and disrupt peace in the state”.
The Chairman of NLC in Enugu State, Chukwumaife Nze expressed regrets over the action of the police.
He said the police, since last Monday, prevented them from joining other Nigerians to say no to the removal of fuel subsidy, despite the assurance by labour that the planned protest would be peaceful.
Nze, however, maintained that the police “cannot prevent them from joining other states in the nationwide protest and strike”.
On the ‘No Work, No Pay Policy’ of the state government, he told workers to disregard the policy and continue with the strike.
However, civil servants in Enugu have continued to shun the ongoing strike as they have continued to render services to people in their offices. (Daily Times)
