FG WILL DECLARE NATIONWIDE STATE EMERGENCY SOON - CSOs

LAGOS - Civil Society Organisations, CSOs, in the country have accused both the federal and state governments of setting the stage to declare a state of emergency on the country to enable them ram through with their decision to remove fuel subsidy on the people.

This was contained in a statement signed by the Executive Director, Human Rights Monitor, HRM, Mr Festus Okoye;Mallam Y. Z. Yau of CITAD; Anyakwe Nsirimovu, Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law, IHRH and Innocent Chukwuma of CLEEN Foundation.
Others include Funke Aluko, for Centre for Genders Rights Protection, CGRP; Comrade Emma Ezeazu, Alliance for Credible Elections; Saviour Akpan, Community Policing Partners and Faruk Umar, secretary, Transparency in Nigeria.

The statement read: “It is clear that the Federal Government and some of their collaborating state governments are resolved to impose curfew in different parts of the country and ultimately impose a state of emergency throughout the federation. This will enable them ram through their fuel subsidy removal decision on the Nigerian people.

“As at today, curfew has been imposed in states like Zamfara, Kaduna and Oyo States. Other signs and indices of the obduracy of government and its resolve to set the stage for the imposition of a state of emergency in Nigeria include: “The threats being issued by the Attorney General of the Federation asking workers to resume work or their salaries will be stopped.” (Vanguard)
