Bomb scare causes stir at South African electricity coy

There was a bomb scare at the head office of Eskom, South Africa’s major electricity provider, in Johannesburg on Friday.

The company’s workers were promptly evacuated from the office after a bomb threat was received via a telephone call.

Eskom’s spokesperson, Hillary Joffe, told journalists that workers were evacuated from the building after a bomb threat alarm was raised.

“I can confirm there has been a bomb scare, there was a phone call warning us about the planting of bomb in our premises. The police were promptly notified about it and the police are on the scene,” she said.
Joffe, nonetheless, declined to give further information about the incident, saying: “I cannot say anything about the incident at this stage.

“SAPS (South African Police Service) has taken over the premises to find the bomb if any; until we are informed about the actual situation of things by the experts, I cannot give further comment.’’
An Eskom employee, who pleaded anonymity, said that all the workers were told to move out of the building because of the bomb threat.

“The police came in and searched the building, while we stood nearby awaiting the police findings,” he said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that a similar bomb alarm was raised at a shopping mall in Johannesburg in December during the Yuletide and some people were injured in the ensuing pandemonium. (NAN)
