Attempt To Bomb Army Barracks Foiled
Commander of 2 Brigade Nigerian Army, Brig-General Tukur Y. Buratai has disclosed the arrest of suspects with links with the dreaded Boko Haram islamist sect that had attempted to bomb Port Harcourt Barracks,Bori Camp, Bougainvilla Hotel and Shell facility along Aba Road,Port Harcourt, was foiled on the night of 24/25 December 2011.
Coincidentally, the timing of the planned attack on 2 Brigade Headquarters would been the same time St Theresa’s Catholic, Madalla was bombed and over 40 people were killed.
The Commander confirmed that an army officer was initially arrested but after thorough investigation jointly carried out by the military intelligence and SSS, the soldier was found not to be an accomplice.
However, the suspects would soon be brought to book.
Brig. Buratai also said within a few months under review, 36 kidnappers, 11 armed robbers were arrested,34 suspects operating illegal refineries and oil thieves were arrested, while 108 illegal refining sites destroyed.
He further disclosed that six robbery attacks were foiled, four kidnap attempts were also foiled and 20 kidnap victims were rescued.
Brig-General Buratai disclosed that the suspects were arrested in the barracks as well as other locations within Port Harcourt.
The Commander who briefed news men at the 2 Brigade headquarters, Port Harcourt, along with the Mr. Segun Agbaje Director of the State Security Service,SSS, and Josak Habila, Deputy Commissioner of police in charge of Operations, said that the suspects had materials for making improvised explosive devices, IEDs, capable of causing massive damage.
Meanwhile, the two corps members kidnapped at Edoga village in Etche Local Government Area of Rivers State, were today rescued by a combined team of security agencies led by the army. (PM News)
